ACCOUNTABILITY
This week I was reminded of the importance of accountability. Of the different aspects of the coaching process, this one not only gets overlooked most often but is also one of the most critical.
Left to our own devices, we as humans drift from our original focus. In a moment of clarity, motivation, desire or some other reason, we decide that there is something we want to achieve.
Immediately (hopefully) we put things in place to get the wheels turning in that direction. This is good, right and proper.
However, invariably, that initial response starts to fade. This is likely due to lowered motivation, frustration, expectations or some other shiny object that took out momentum.
This is where accountability steps in.
Having accountability systems in place can help overcome all those obstacles. Seth Godin calls this “The Dip” in his book titled the same. It’s basically when the initial motivation starts to fizzle and we’re in the middle of the work, but not to the breakthrough moment.
I have multiple forms of accountability. Examples of these include an accountability partner, masterminds, groups and coaches. In all of these, the premise is to have others who come alongside you and help you get through those tough times or simply make sure you stay focused.
While having the instructions and game plan in place is essential, don’t miss out on the value and importance of having accountability in place to lock it in and stay on track.
