GYM FOCUS
At the gym I see a ton of different personalities. To name a handful (and I’m guessing you can identify these types too), the gym rat, the social bee, the cardio junkie, super selfie, the flexer, the screamer, the singer and let’s not forget the bicep guy and glute girl.
While I’m of course being funny (and stereotyping a bit) we all have different personalities in the gym, and absolutely everyone should be able to get their training on in their own style (as long as they don’t impede on others).
But let me talk about gym focus. This is important to not only be able to train around some of the distracting personalities above, but also to get the most out of your training. While I consider myself a social guy usually, in the gym, I’m there to train. Catch me before or after my session and I am happy to have a conversation, but it’s time to put in the work when I’m there.
There are lots of techniques that help with this, but a few of my personal favorites are:
Have a training log/plan to follow.
Use a rest timer.
Stay off social media.
Don’t watch the TVs.
Ear buds/head phones.
Minimize eye contact.
Again, the tips above aren’t going to help you make gym friends, but they will help keep you focused on training and get you in and out of the gym, plus make your workouts more effective. I also think you’ll still gain gym friends and respect of others who are doing the same (except for the screamer, nobody likes that guy, lol).
