PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION
I wouldn’t say I’m a perfectionist. Besides the fact that I have proved to myself many times over that I’m far from perfect, I have worked to not set those expectations on myself.
However what I do obsessively focus on is striving for progress.
When it comes to fitness (and really about everything including baking a cake), the steps taken to get to the final outcome are the leading indicators for success.
Show me someone who focuses on staying in their routine and doing the mundane but critical things day after day, and I’ll show you someone with amazing wins over time.
Besides being consistent, the other side of this philosophy is to not get derailed if things don’t go exactly to plan. This is where the perfection mindset can creep in. It’s important to not only stay away from perfect expectations but equally important is starting fresh when things are exactly what you anticipated.
Whether it’s shifting your training around due to circumstances you can’t control. Having a meal or a day that is off plan with your nutrition. Not having your normal workout clothes or gear with you. Missing an perceived outcome for an event you have been training for. All of these require picking it right back up and moving forward.
