SPLURGE URGE
After a bodybuilding competition, my favorite go-to is breakfast. If I want to be even more specific, cinnamon rolls. In fact, when I travel to compete, one of the first things I’m seeking out is what the best local breakfast dive is.
Whether you just got done with a bodybuilding competition or are at granny’s house, we all face times when the urge to splurge hits us.
There are many factors at play, physiological, psychological and emotional. At times, it’s good to give yourself this opportunity to recharge and indulge. However, there are other times that this should be avoided and saved for another day.
Here are four guidelines on when/how to handle.
1. Plan it out: If there is a programmed meal that you’re going to treat yourself, plan it out so that it’s still structured. Perhaps at the end of a big benchmark or after a physically rigorous activity.
2. Go somewhere: Have it be a destination so you can go there and then leave there. This makes it easier to walk away versus conveniently located at arms reach in the home.
3. Be defensive: If it’s not a planned meal, keep food quality high, volume up and keep activity levels high to stay engaged (and frankly distracted) from the temptation.
4. Move on: After said planned splurge or in the event of an unplanned one, move forward to the next day, get back on plan and recommit to the game plan and set your sights on the next benchmark.
Holidays, celebrations, occasions and the like all present these opportunities and challenges. Look ahead and be strategic to handle them accordingly and come out on top with whichever scenario fits best and sets you up for success.
